Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief: Navigating State Exemptions & New York’s New Law

Property taxes remain one of the most relentless expenses for homeowners. But if you have served our country and live with service-connected injuries, substantial relief is available. For many disabled veterans, these costs can be drastically reduced or entirely wiped out.

At Dixson Tax Resolution Services LLC, we routinely help clients navigate complex tax burdens across the country—from Orlando, Florida, to Dallas, Texas, to San Diego, California. Right now, there is shifting legislation that could protect your financial stability, including a new law in New York that dramatically expands property tax exemptions. Here is what you need to know to secure these benefits.

What Does a Property Tax Exemption Actually Mean?

Tax exemptions are not one-size-fits-all. Depending on your local jurisdiction, an exemption might reduce the taxable value of your primary residence, eliminate specific local taxes while keeping school taxes intact, or wipe out the bill completely. Two veterans with identical home values could face wildly different tax liabilities simply based on state lines and proactive filing.

New York’s 2026 Policy Change

New York is removing bureaucratic hurdles for veterans with a 100% service-connected disability. Previously, local municipalities had to opt in, creating an uneven patchwork of relief. The updated legislation standardizes this benefit statewide, granting a full property tax exemption on primary residences. This takes effect October 1, 2026.

States Offering Full 100% Exemptions

While every state provides some veteran relief, only a select group offers full exemptions. As of 2026, qualifying veterans in these states may owe zero property taxes on their main home:

  • Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii
  • Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan
  • New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico
  • Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina
  • Texas, Virginia, and New York (effective late 2026)

Securing Your Exemption: It Is Not Automatic

We see this frequently in our practice: taxpayers assume their VA rating automatically triggers tax relief. It does not. You must actively apply through your local county assessor. Be prepared to supply your military discharge papers, proof of ownership, and your VA service-connected disability documentation. Some states even extend these protections to surviving spouses or veterans with partial ratings.
