July 2026 Business Tax Deadlines: Keep Your Company Compliant and Off the IRS Radar

Summer is officially in full swing, and while you might be planning a well-deserved getaway, the IRS calendar never takes a break. For business owners and employers across the country—from the busy tourism hubs of Orlando, Florida, to the tech centers of San Diego, California, and the corporate corridors of Dallas, Texas—July brings a critical wave of tax and reporting deadlines.

At Dixson Tax Resolution Services LLC, we see firsthand how easily a missed mid-year deadline can spiral into a serious IRS collection issue. Payroll tax discrepancies and unfiled benefit plan returns are among the quickest ways to trigger aggressive IRS enforcement actions. To keep your focus on running your operations rather than looking over your shoulder, let's walk through the essential business tax due dates for July 2026.

Early to Mid-Month Deadlines: Benefit Plans and Payroll Deposits

The first half of the month sets the stage for major compliance requirements, particularly if you manage employee benefit plans or have a steady payroll.

July 1: Self-Employed Individuals with Pension Plans
If you operate a pension or profit-sharing plan, you may be required to file Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for the 2025 calendar year. Even though the official deadline isn't until the end of the month, the complexity of these returns means you need to start gathering your data now. Contact our office immediately to determine if you have a filing requirement so we can secure the necessary time to prepare an accurate return and prevent steep late-filing penalties.

July 15: Social Security, Medicare, and Withheld Income Tax
If your business operates under the monthly deposit rule, today is the day to deposit the tax for payments made in June. The IRS is notoriously relentless when it comes to trust fund taxes. Failing to remit these withheld amounts can lead to severe consequences, including personal liability for business owners through the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty.

July 15: Nonpayroll Withholding
Similarly, if the monthly deposit rule applies to your nonpayroll withholding, you must deposit the tax for payments processed in June.

The End-of-Month Heavyweight: July 31 Deadlines

The final day of July is a major compliance hurdle for businesses nationwide. As the second quarter wraps up, employers face several strict reporting and payment requirements.

  • Social Security, Medicare, and Withheld Income Tax: You must file Form 941 for the second quarter of 2026. Additionally, deposit or pay any undeposited tax under the accuracy of deposit rules. If your tax liability is less than $2,500, you are permitted to pay it in full with a timely filed return. Good news for those who deposited their quarterly tax in full and on time: you are granted an automatic extension until August 10 to file the return.
  • Self-Employed Individuals with Pension Plans: This is the absolute final due date for filing Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for calendar year 2025.
  • All Employers Maintaining Benefit Plans: If you maintain an employee benefit plan—such as a pension, profit sharing, or stock bonus plan—you must file Form 5500 or 5500-EZ for calendar year 2025. If your business uses a fiscal year as your plan year, the form is due by the last day of the seventh month after the plan year ends.
  • Certain Small Employers: Deposit any undeposited tax if your total tax liability is projected to be $2,500 or more for 2026, but was less than $2,500 for the second quarter.
  • Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA): Deposit the tax owed through June if your liability exceeds $500.

Navigating Weekends, Holidays, and Disaster Zones

Tax deadlines are rigid, but the IRS does offer standardized grace periods for specific circumstances.

Weekends & Holidays: If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the due date is automatically extended until the next business day that is not itself a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions: Weather events and natural disasters can severely disrupt business operations, a reality we frequently navigate with our clients in vulnerable areas like Florida, California, and Texas. Please note that when a geographical area is designated as a disaster area, due dates will be extended.
