Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As January 2026 approaches, it’s crucial for businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen to stay aware of important tax deadlines. Proactively managing these can ensure compliance and help avoid unnecessary penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Deposit Requirements

Employers must adhere to the monthly deposit rules by January 15 to remit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025. Additionally, this deadline applies to nonpayroll withholding deposits for the same period under the monthly rule. Remember, employment tax deposits are to be made electronically unless your deposit liability for a return period is less than $2,500, in which case quarterly or annual payments with your return are permitted.

January 15 - Compliance for Farmers and Fishermen

These groups must pay their estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by January 15. If this isn’t done, they need to file their 2025 tax return and settle any taxes by March 2, 2026, to avoid an estimated tax penalty. This deadline allows a longer filing period until April 15, but prompt payment is needed to avoid penalties.

Weekends & Public Holidays:

When a due date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline automatically shifts to the next business day that isn’t a holiday.
